Tourism on Lombok
Senggigi is still the main tourism area of Lombok. The variety of activities offered
is big; from watersports over golfing and trekking to climbing. Every type of accomodation
from 5 star resorts to quiet, little homestays is available.
The Gili Islands are well kown; critics say better than Lombok itself, amongst
travellers. All the big diving centers have bases on the three tiny islands on the northwestern
coast of Lombok, and diving or snorkeling is something that really attracts here.
Great underwater flora and fauna invite to exiting excourses amongst the colourful
reefs that surround those islands.
Kuta-Lombok with its white sandy beaches is also to be mentioned;
well known especially amongst surfers. It is about one hour by car from Mataram,
quiet and beautiful, a must for people that dont like overrun places.
Although the Province Nusa Tenggara Barat (Lombok and Sumbawa) hosts no
more than 3 per cent of the international visitors to Indonesia, Lombok in particular
is becoming an increasingly popular destination. For a long time Lombok was not noticed
as a tourist destination of any importance, mostly because of the popularity of its neighbour
Bali. However, with the growing demand for new destinations the interest in Lombok
began to develop, and nowadays Lombok is described as a new paradise. The number of foreign
as well as domestic tourists has increased in the last few years, as has the number of
hotel rooms.
